Beginner Tai Chi classes

Why choose Kam Lau School?

At Kam Lau School, we pride ourselves in providing a high quality learning experience that can be enjoyed by Tai Chi students of all abilities and standards. We put a lot of emphasis into our attention to detail and precise step-by-step instructions so that even beginner-level students find our Tai Chi classes easy to understand and follow. We recognise the importance of building confidence in our students, as well as the enjoyment of Tai Chi. You can read more here about why you should choose to learn tai chi from the Kam Lau School.

The school runs in 4 terms a year

  • January - March
  • April - June
  • July - September
  • October - December

Payment should be made at the beginning of each term.

All of our classes run right through the year, except Christmas and Bank Holidays.

Instead of charging students for the whole term, participants are welcome to try out 4 consecutive taster lessons prior to full term commitment. The cost for the 4 consecutive week taster lessons is typically charged at around £20-£40 (varies from venue to venue). There is no obligation to continue/pay for the rest of the term if you think Tai Chi is not suitable for you after the initial taster sessions.

So, after your initial 4 consecutive week taster session, the remainder of the current term becomes due as a single payment. There will usually be 8 or 9 weeks left of the current term. We do not offer pay-as-you-go or drop-in sessions except where otherwise stated.

Friendly advice: Please do not just turn up to any of our classes in person unannounced and expect to join right away! Advance booking is required.

Annual membership fee: The membership fee of £16 runs from 1st October - 30th September. It is non-refundable and the fee may be applied pro rata. This fee is only payable if you decide to carry on after the initial 4 consecutive taster sessions have finished.

Please note payments can be paid by cash or bank transfer only. We do not accept credit/debit card payments.

What do you learn in class?

  • Warm-up and stretching
  • Chi Kung (Qi Gong) exercise
  • The Tai Chi Hand Form (Chen-style or Yang-style)

The main element in Tai Chi is called the Hand Form (a series of movements linked together in sequence). This is by far the most challenging part of training, because we need to gradually develop good co-ordination of the hands and feet to complete sections of the Form. If you are new to this type of exercise, you may find it takes quite some time to learn the moves, but after many repetitions, it will come naturally.

Advice - Don't expect too much too soon, patience and perseverance are essential!

Terms & conditions

Please ensure that you have read and agree to our school's terms & conditions and disclaimer, as it includes important information that may concern you should you choose to practice tai chi with our school.

Covid and safety guideline

Of course, as classes resume, it is still vitally important that we look after each others' safety, and we want to reassure you that your health and wellbeing remains the School's highest priority.

For that reason, we strongly advise all students to follow the advice below:

  • Attend ONLY if you are free of Covid-19 symptoms
  • Let us know that you are coming along, so we can manage numbers
  • Travel to the venue by private transport where possible
  • Bring a personal supply of hand sanitiser, or use the venue’s, where provided
  • Maintain a safe personal separation at all times
  • Practice in side-by-side (rather than face-to-face) groups
  • Feel free to wear a face covering if preferred, though it’s not mandatory
  • Reduce the number of people you have contact with by working in assigned sub-groups (so we will each work with only a few others)
  • Remember to wash your hands thoroughly as appropriate
  • Enter & leave the premises singly & patiently, maintaining safe distance.

You will understand, of course, that insurance against Covid-related risks is unavailable, so the decision to attend has to be at your own risk and discretion.

For those who plan to attend classes, it is vitally important that we all adhere to the above advice, and get back to enjoying our Tai Chi! We look forward to welcoming you back to classes very soon.
